Dandy Florals Design
A mobile app concept focused on providing an interactive, real time customizable floral arrangement experience
Overview
Opportunity
2022 was the largest wedding year the world has seen since 1984. With more weddings and unique couples than ever, I imagined and designed an app focused on providing users with the ability to create and view their custom floral arrangements in real time. A majority of floral arrangement businesses offer premade and custom arrangement options. However, the custom arrangements options do not provide the user the ability to create and view their unique creations in real time. The user is only able to request their custom arrangement without truly knowing what it will look like.
Goal
Conceptualize an app oriented around an interactive, real-time floral arrangement tool that promotes user confidence, excitement and enjoyment
Role
UX Designer and Prototyper
Personas
Persona Creation
Based off of user feedback related to popular floral arrangement services, and five interviews with friends and family that have used floral arrangement services before, I created two personas based on common user needs and pain points.
Naomi, Newly Engaged
Pain Point: Frustrated she can't envision her ideal wedding flowers. Feels stressed on how to feel confident in what flowers she picks without seeing them together first.
Goal: View custom floral arrangement prior to placing order. Feel confident and excited knowing what her arrangements will look.
Jeremy, Loving Father
Pain Point: Apprehensive to create his own arrangements. Very busy but wants to find a way to have flowers sent to his wife and daughters every month.
Goal: Effortlessly schedule and subscribe to uniquely crafted arrangements to surprise his wife and daughters
Competitive Audit
Identify Competition & Opportunities
I conducted a competitive audit analysis to identify what competitors are doing well, and what potential user needs are not being met. I focused on direct competitors, but also looked into potential indirect competitors. My main objective was to identify any potential gaps and found the real-time custom floral arrangement tool was not offered by any of the competitors.
Ideation
Sketches
While sketching design ideas, I placed myself in the users' shoes and thought of what tools would be most important for them to access first. My goal was to design an aesthetically pleasing product, while still providing the users with an interface that was easy to navigate. Considering a main user need is to create a unique floral arrangement, I wanted that to be a clear and easy option on the homepage.
Wireframe
Low-Fidelity Wireframing
Utilizing my sketches as a guide, I compiled my favorite design concepts to create each screen. My main takeaway while converting sketches into lo-fi wireframes was recognizing how overwhelming the Custom Arrangement Tool could be if not designed carefully.
Prototype
High-Fidelity Prototype
I used Figma to build the high-fidelity prototype. For the color scheme, I drew inspiration from the floral arrangements to embody a calming and organic feel. The main colors are green and pink, with the Elsie Google font, inspired by feminine energy.
I wanted to provide the user a variety of high-demand needs on the homepage. Therefore, the custom creation tool is the first option, as well as arrangements, and subscriptions. The design goal was to give the users popular options upfront without being overwhelming.
The main focus was to create an interactive floral arrangements tool. Within the custom arrangement tool, users can chose a variety of flowers, remove them, and confirm their custom arrangement before officially checking out. There are also three confirmation steps throughout the checkout process for users to be absolutely confident in their custom arrangement before officially placing the order.
Style Guide
Below is the style guide/design system I created for the Dandy Florals app concept. As mentioned earlier, I went with an natural inspired color scheme, as well as a delicate and natural feeling font. The buttons in the screens were also rounded to maintain a soft and subtle energy.
Reflection
What did I learn from Dandy Florals?
Dandy Florals is the first project I worked on that focused on creating a design from scratch. Fashioning a design from the ground up can seem daunting, but it was incredibly exciting to have no limits on it's potential. It was very fulfilling to be able to take an imagined concept and turn it into something real. I feel that user research took the idea and turned it into a well-rounded, comprehensive product. I basked in the creative freedom to make this idea come to life, and gained momentum as I imagined how fun it would be for it to meet user needs. Please feel free to play around with the prototype below, and let me know your thoughts! :)
